The United States government has started to crack down on the immigration policies and also the green card imposition mechanism. In this context, latest developments are suggesting that the United States has started to tighten up the marital green card program.
The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has implemented stricter rules for marriage-based green card applications this year, making the process more demanding. Key changes include:
• Stricter Scrutiny of Marriages: USCIS is closely investigating the authenticity of relationships, requiring extensive proof like joint finances, cohabitation evidence, and consistent interview responses. Surprise home visits have also become more common.
• Longer Processing Times: Applicants face delays in receiving biometrics appointments, work/travel permits, and final approvals—often stretching 8 to 14 months or more due to increased vetting.
• Updated Forms & Higher Fees: New versions of required forms (I-130, I-485) are now mandatory, and filing fees have increased. Using outdated paperwork can result in rejection or delays.
Back in the day, it was very easy to acquire a marital. Marrying someone who is a permanent resident of the United States would automatically grant the green card. However, after the start of the Trump administration, the regulations and constraints on this matter are going to be pretty hard.
