Donald Trump recently expressed his support for the H1-B visa program that allows highly skilled workers to enter the United States. He said he has always favored these visas. Trump also added that such visas are already used at his businesses.

The debate over the H1-B program has caused a division between Trump’s traditional supporters and tech leaders like Elon Musk. Musk has strongly defended the program and vowed to fight for it. During his election campaign, Trump focused on reducing immigration. He promised to deport undocumented immigrants and limit legal immigration. However tech leaders argue that the United States does not produce enough highly skilled workers.

Elon Musk who came to the U.S. on an H1-B visa from South Africa stressed the program’s importance. He stated that attracting top engineering talent is essential for America’s success. Vivek Ramaswamy who is a businessman of Indian descent also supports the program and criticized America’s culture of mediocrity and warned about competition from China.

Some of Trump’s long-time supporters are unhappy with this stance. They believe Trump should prioritize American workers and further restrict immigration. Laura Loomer who is a far-right Trump supporter voiced her concerns. She claimed that Trump must be protected from “technocrats” like Musk.

Musk responded strongly to critics, warning of a “MAGA civil war.” He used harsh words for opponents, including Trump strategist Steve Bannon. Bannon criticized the H1-B program, calling it unfair to American workers. He also insulted Musk calling him a “toddler.” The disagreement has raised concerns among Trump’s original backers. They worry that he may be influenced by wealthy tech donors like Musk.
