A new bill introduced in the US Senate has raised serious concerns among Indian students studying in America. The bill, named the “Fairness for High-Skilled American Act 2025,” aims to completely stop the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program which allows international students to work in the US after finishing their studies.

Many students choose to study in the US because of the OPT program. It gives them a chance to gain work experience and recover part of the high tuition fees they pay—usually around $80,000 to $100,000. If this bill becomes law, students will no longer be allowed to work in the US after graduation, even for a year.

The politicians supporting the bill claim that foreign students take away job opportunities from American graduates. But experts say this is not true. US citizens already have an advantage in the job market. Most companies hire international students only when they cannot find qualified American candidates.

If passed, this law could harm not only students but also US universities. Without OPT, fewer international students may apply for education in the US affecting the revenue of educational institutions.

Although chances of the bill passing are slim, the proposal itself sends a strong message. It suggests that the US might be becoming less welcoming to immigrant students.

For now, students and universities are watching the developments closely. The outcome of this bill could shape the future of international education in America and change how students around the world view studying there.
