The potential imposition of tariffs on Indian exports by the Trump administration has raised concerns about a trade conflict between India and the United States, according to Congressman Suhas Subramanyam. He firmly opposes these tariffs, citing the negative impact they could have on both. Subramanyam emphasized the importance of economic cooperation between the two countries, the growth of Indian companies in the U.S. and the crucial role of a strong US-India relationship for democracy and mutual strength.

Subramanyam, set to join the House of Representatives, will be part of a body that plays a significant role in shaping U.S. foreign policy. His induction marks him as the first Indian elected to the House from the East Coast and he joins five other Indian Americans, forming the 'Samosa Caucus.' This group's involvement indicates an increasing representation of Indian Americans in U.S. politics, potentially affecting future U.S.-India relations.

Amidst the tariff concerns, Subramanyam also shed light on the need for comprehensive reform in the U.S. immigration system. He criticized the current state of immigration processes, including issues surrounding H1B visas, green cards, and citizenship. He advocates for a focus on legal immigration and enhanced border protection, also opposing job cuts. His stance reflects a broader perspective on the necessity of reform beyond the Trump administration's proposed changes, emphasizing the importance of understanding the nuances of immigration policies and their implications on individuals.

"I am not in favor of tariffs. I think it's a really bad idea. It could lead to a trade war. I believe it's not good for either country. There are many companies in India that are doing very well and many of them are expanding their operations in America, too. Economically, the two countries need to work together more. That is how we can become stronger. India is the largest democracy. The strengthening of the US-India relationship is crucial for both sides," Subramanyam told PTI.

With the looming threat of tariffs and the critical need for immigration reform, Subramanyam's roles and views could significantly influence the future trajectory of US-India relations. His opposition to tariffs and dedication to improving immigration policies underscore the complexities of international diplomacy and domestic governance. As Subramanyam prepares to take office, his actions and advocacy may pave the way for more collaborative and mutually beneficial US-India interactions, highlighting the importance of understanding and cooperation in addressing global challenges.
