In what could be an unfortunate incident, the famous shrine of Goddess Vaishnavi in Jammu and Kashmir reported a stampede leaving no less than 12 devotees breathing their last due to their severe congestion. With the devotees rushing to the temple at once, the incident happened.

The concerned officials in the Union Territory had swung into action and took part in the rescue operation. Around 13 people were injured in the stampede incident. The victims have been shifted to a nearby hospital facility for treatment by the authorities.

A high-level probe has been called by the government to look into the matter to ascertain the reason behind the stampede. The probe was started and more details are expected to be announced by the government very soon.

Jammu and Kashmir's Director General of Police Dilbag Singh addressed the media to provide more details on the issue and said that the stampede took place during the early hours of Saturday. The reason behind this is said to be an argument among the devotees as to who should go inside the temple first.

A few of the victims' condition is serious. All the victims have been shifted to the hospital for treatment and they are being provided with better treatment. If needed, more facilities would be equipped at the establishment, the official said.

The Vaishno Devi temple board had stopped allowing the devotees into the temple for a brief period after the stampede. However, after the situation came under control, the devotees were allowed to offer prayers to the deity.

The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi reacted to the sad incident and expressed his grief on what happened with the devotees at the shrine. The families of the deceased would be given an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh while the injured were announced a sum of Rs 50,000.
