The Nellore district has a big prominence in state politics. Almost every party tries to increase the footprints there. The region gave many cabinet Ministers and leaders. This is the legacy the region has in politics, be it a combined state or the bifurcated Andhra Pradesh.
However, the ruling YSRCP faced a big blow in the region when the elections are due in a year. A few leaders became rebel leaders and shocked the party. The party leadership swung into action and sacked them from the party who are now traveling with the opposition party.
The Mekapati family is one of the big families in the region. When YS Jagan started YCP, the family stood by him. Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy and his brother supported the party. Despite this, Mekapati Chandra Sekhar Reddy parted ways with the party and was sacked.
This can be seen as a big blow given the ties the Mekapati family enjoys with the YS family. Mekapati Gautam Reddy was made the Cabinet Minister. But Udayagiri MLA parted ways. However, the YCP addressed the issue and the earliest and found his replacement in a Mekapati family member.
Mekapati Rajagopal Reddy was announced as the in-charge of the Udayagiri Assembly constituency. The Mekapati family is hopeful that he would be the candidate for the upcoming polls.
Rajgopal Reddy is a contractor by profession and is a popular name in the region. If he is made the candidate, then the Mekapati family goodwill would work for him and make him win.
YCP is appointing in-charges for the constituencies and they will focus on making the party strong. They will get to work with the leaders and this would come in handy if Rajgopal Reddy is announced as the candidate.
