Closure of Godavari Bridge: Is YSRCP panicking over Amaravati yatra?
By: Tupaki Desk | 15 Oct 2022 4:43 AM GMTIn normal times, the closure of a bridge due to maintenance and repairs should not attract curiosity. But, if the bridge is closed just when a protest rally is all set to Pass over it, then it is bound to raise interest and even controversy. The East Godavari district collector's decision to close down the Rail-cum-road bridge over Godavari river has now become controversial.
The district collector's orders said that the bridge would be temporarily closed due to safety concerns and repair works. However, political watchers say that this move is aimed at stopping the yatra of the Amaravati farmers. Sources say that the TDP is strong in Rajahmundry town and has both the MLAs in its kitty. Hence, the response to the yatra would be very good if it enters Rajahmndry.
So, the general public and the political observers feel that this is a move by the ruling YSRCP to prevent the yatra on the rail-cum-road bridge. If the yatra is allowed, the TDP, which is backing the yatra, might use this as a photo-op. In fact, the visuals of the yatra on the bridge were effectively used by YS Jagan in the run up to the 2019 elections.
Even late YSR used the visuals of his crossing the Chinchnada bridge near Razole to great effect. Hence, Jagan does not want the Amaravati farmers to get an opportunity to showcase their strength. The Amaravati farmers yatra is slated to cross the bridge on October 17. But, with the new restrictions, it may have to take another route.
The Amaravati farmers say that there is no question of abandoning the yatra. They said that the would continue the yatra even if it means a delay of a couple of days. They say that the Jagan government is unnerved by the massive response the yatra is eliciting in the central and north coastal Andhra region.
