Global Road Safety Body Waiting For India's Budget!
By: Tupaki Desk | 19 Jan 2023 2:01 PM GMTThe implementation of single tax Goods and Services Tax (GST) made the cost of many commodities go up. The GST includes almost everything and there are barely a few things that are not touched by the controversial tax system. Every item comes with state and central taxes.
The implementation of GST made an international body urge the Union government to scrap the tax so that everyone will use the item. A letter asking the same was written to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. All eyes are on the Centre to see what the government will do now.
The global not-for-profit organization International Road Federation (IRF) opined that imposing GST pon helmets is not a good thing and scrapping the tax would make it affordable for people and they will wear it. Giving the details of road accidents involving two-wheelers the body urged the union government.
The body said that wearing a helmet is one of the big precautions to save lives and making them wear standard helmets would not only reduce the injuries but also brings down the deaths caused by the accidents. Having said that, the body asked the Finance Minister to look into it.
"The two-wheeler riders, being most vulnerable, constitute almost 31.4 percent of road accidental deaths primarily due to head injuries. One of the most effective measures to reduce two-wheeler accident injuries and fatalities is the use of standard helmets," the IRF said in the letter.
As the Union budget for the financial year 2023-24 would be tabled soon, the body said that it would be appropriate to scrap the tax in the budget sessions. Not just Indians, the global body is also waiting for the budget.
