By: Tupaki Desk | 18 Feb 2023 3:09 PM GMTHinduism is one of the oldest religions in the world and temples are an integral part of the culture. India is home to many iconic and historic temples and some of them have a certain history. If we look at Thiruvairanikkulam Mahadeva temple in Aluva, non-Hindus are not allowed to enter. The tradition has been followed for a very long time.
As India and other nations are celebrating Mahashivratri, let us know some interesting facts about a historic temple that is locked throughout the year and is opened only one day which is the Mahashivratri festival. The historic temple will be open for just 12 hours and devotees across the nation will visit it.
The temple is in Madhya Pradesh in the Raisen district. The temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is known as Someshwar Mahadev and is believed to have been built in the 12th century by a Hindu ruler. Later a few Muslim invaders are said to have captured it and attacked it.
However, post-independence the devotees started a demand that the temple should be opened for the devotees so that they can worship and seek the blessings of Bholenath. But the movement saw a big momentum in the 1970s and the Hindu groups started a protest. Seeing this, the then Chief Minister of the state Prakashchand Sethi opened the gates of the temple in 1974, and the tradition of opening the temple had been followed since then.
The temple has been under the control of the Archaeological Department and that is the reason why the temple is not open to devotees on normal days. So devotees are not allowed to enter the temple on other days and the temple will be opened on Mahashivratri.
The temple will be open for just 12 hours, from 6 AM to 6 PM. So devotees across the nation try to visit the historic temple and seek the blessings of Lord Shiva. The government makes all the arrangements for devotees to see that they won't face any issues in making darshan. On normal days, devotees offer their prayers outside the gate and make a wish.
