Home minister Mahmood Ali on Saturday stirred up a controversy by making some questionable comments on women's dresses. Reacting to a complaint by a girl student, who alleged that she was made to remove her hijab before taking an examination, Ali said that the girls should not wear European dresses. He said that women should wear according to the society and should cover their head with a pallu or head scarf.

One should dress in a manner that would gain respect from others. Women who are scantily clad will invite trouble, he said. He said that those women who dress decently will command respect. People would feel relaxed in their presence, he added.

Ali is not new to making such controversial comments on women's attire or behaviour. In 2019, during the infamous Disha case, he had said that the ill-fated girl, who was gangraped, should have called the cops instead of her sister. "She was a well-educated girl. She should have first called the police instead of calling her sister," he said. He added that had she dialled 100, she would have been saved by the police.

Home minister's comments drew the ire of womens rights activists. Noted activist Brinda Adige said that Ali should remember that we are not living in a medieval theocratic state. She said women have bodily autonomy. BJP leader Vikram goud tweeted thus: MLC K. Kavitha sits on Dharna for Women Reservation Bill and here her own party members are passing sexist slurs. Why doesn't she set her own house in order first?"
