American monthly magazine The National Geographic Magazine is a name that needs no introduction. The magazine enjoys a super following across the globe and it covers various topics. The magazine was set up in 1888 as a scholarly journal. With years passing by, it went through a few changes.

Since the 1990s, The National Geographic Magazine has been covering topics like geography, history, nature, science, and world culture. It is also popular in India and readers eagerly wait for the magazine. However, there are a few doubts about whether the magazine is getting shut down.

Famous media outlet Washington Post said that many writers from NatGeo publications were sacked from their positions. As many as 19 writers, including seniors, were removed. The shocking thing is that the writers were informed about the layoffs a few months back and the layoffs came into effect earlier this week.

As per the media reports, the layoffs have been happening since 2015. AT regular intervals, employees are being removed and freelancers are taken in their place. A few years later, The Walt Disney Company took the magazine into its control and it has been controlling the magazine. The iconic magazine has a good readership across the globe.

Adding fuel to the doubts about The National Geographic Magazine shutting down, writers who are associated with the magazine are taking to social media to share the news of layoffs. On the occasion, the writers recalled the association they have with the magazine and also thanked the management for the opportunities.

Craig Welch who writes on climate change and the Pacific Northwest's natural resources is among the writers who shared the news online that the magazine is going for layoffs. Sharing a feature, the writer said that this is his last feature as a senior writer.

"My new National Geographic just arrived, which includes my latest feature—my 16th, and my last as a senior writer.NatGeo is laying off all of its staff writers. I’ve been so lucky. I got to work w/incredible journalists and tell important, global stories. It’s been an honor," the senior writer said on Twitter.
