Jagan holds the key to Presidential election outcome
By: Tupaki Desk | 11 Jun 2022 5:10 AM GMTHow will YS Jagan Mohan Reddy play his cards in the upcoming Presidential elections? How will he leverage his strengths and get the best possible deal for the state of Andhra Pradesh? Will he use the elections to strike a bargain with the Central Government and the BJP, which are desperate to get their candidate elected as the president of the country?
The NDA falls slightly short of the magic number in terms of votes for the presidential election. It needs the support of parties like Biju Janata Dal of Odisha and the YSRCP. Thus, YSRCP becomes extremely crucial in the BJP scheme of things. The total value of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs from Andhra Pradesh is pegged at 25488. Similarly, the total value of the MLAs from the state stands at 27825. Thus the total value of votes from AP is 53313. Of this, the YSRCP accounts for 45957. Thus, it has the ability to sway the outcome of the election.
On the other hand, the role of the TDP is quite minimal. It has just three MPs and 23 MLAs. Of these MLAs, four are not active in the TDP. Thus, it will have very little role in influencing he course of the elections.
Political observers feel that the YSRCP can use the vote power at its command to strike a bargain with the BJP and the NDA. It can demand funds for Polavaram and other important projects. How the YSRCP uses this strength remains to be seen. A lot depends on how YS Jagan Mohan Reddy decides to vote for the Presidential elections.
