The wait to see the new Congress chief from outside the Gandhi family is over with former Union Cabinet Minister Mallikarjuna Kharge winning the polls. He swept the polls as around 90 percent of votes were polled in his favour. His opponent Shashi Tharoor was restricted to around 1000 votes.

Mallikarjun Kharge scripted history by becoming the first person outside the Gandhi family to become the head of the Congress party after 1997. While over 9,000 votes were polled in the votes, Kharge received 7,897 votes. Shashi Tharoor received just 1,072 votes. 416 votes were declared invalid.

It is no wonder that Kharge won the polls. Since he was announced as one of the contestants for the polls, many felt that he would win the polls as he is dubbed as one of the loyalists of the Gandhi family. The seniors in the party stood behind Kharge and supported him. Not just supporting him, the seniors also campaigned for him in the polls.

Shashi Tharoor accepted his defeat humbly and congratulated Kharge on the occasion. The MP also said that the AICC chief post is not small and it is a great honour and responsibility.

"It is a great honour & a huge responsibility to be President of @INCIndia &I wish @Kharge ji all success in that task. It was a privilege to have received the support of over a thousand colleagues,& to carry the hopes& aspirations of so many well-wishers of Congress across India," Shashi Tharoor said in his tweet.

Mapanna Mallikarjun Kharge is one of the veteran politicians in the country who has been in politics for over fifty years. His political journey started when he was in college. After student elections, he ventured into politics and became one of the tallest leaders in the country.

In Karnataka, he created a big history and won as an MLA a few times and he is called someone who doesn't know defeat. He served as the Minister and the Cabinet Minister a few times and held good positions. He came very close to becoming the Chief Minister of Karnataka a few times. Sadly, he could not become the Chief Minister. However, he became the chief of the national congress.
