Minister's resignation creates problems for this chief minister
By: Tupaki Desk | 1 Sep 2022 7:10 AM GMTEven before the dust of his coup against the BJP settled down, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar suffered a jolt on Thursday when one of his ministers resigned in protest against shifting him to a less important portfolio. With this, the brittle nature of the RJD-JDU government stood exposed once again. The alliance, which is newly formed, is already suffering strains.
Nitish Kumar has downgraded senior RJD leader Kartik Kumar after allegations of kidnap surfaced against him. Kartik Kumar is still facing a case of kidnap and the BJP has questions as to how a kidnap-accused is made a law minister. Responding to this, Nitish Kumar shifted him from the law ministry to another ministry considered to be of lesser significance.
Protesting against this, Karthik Kumar has sent his resignation from the ministry forcing Nitish Kumar to accept it. With this, tensions have begun among the RJD and the JDU.
Nitish Kumar, who values his image as a Mr Clean, is now faced with a strange situation. He is now a bedfellow with the RJD, which has a surfeit of criminals in its ranks. Many of the MLAs of the RJD have known criminal history and face cases of serious nature, including murder, kidnap and extortion. The demotion of Karthik Kumar has sent alarm bells ringing in the RJD as some more ministers could be dropped the same way.
Karthik Kumar is from the politically and numerically strong Bhumihar community. He is considered quite close to Tejaswi Yadav, who is heading the RJD. Tejaswi reportedly recommended the law ministry for Karthik Kumar and Nitish was left with no option but to allocate the ministry to him.
