MLA's son caught taking bribe of Rs 80 lakh, MLA resigns post
By: Tupaki Desk | 4 March 2023 9:28 AMIn what is being seen as a major setback for the ruling BJP in poll-bound Karnataka, son of a sitting MLA, who is also the chairperson of the government-run soaps and detergent company, was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe to favour a contractor. Wads of currency notes with a face value of Rs 40 lakh were recovered from his home.
Prashant Kumar, son of Channagiri MLA Virupakshappa, was arrested by the Lok Ayukta cops on Friday evening. Virupakshappa is the chairperson of Mysore Soaps and Detergents, a public sector company. The company makes the famous Mysore Sandal Soap. Prashant Kumar demanded Rs 80 lakh for awarding the contract of supplying aromatic oils used in soap-making.
Even as the contractor was giving him part of the decided amount, the LokAyukta police swooped down and arrested him. They also seized the cash from him. This incident has become a huge embarrassment to the ruling BJP. Karnataka will go to polls later this year and the incident has left the party red-faced.
A shocked MLA has resigned from his post of the chairperson of the Mysore Sandal Soaps. He however said that the resignation has nothing to do with his son's action. He said he was in no way connected to the whole incident. However, the incident has turned out to be a huge shock and embarrassment for the BJP.
