The under-construction project Polavaram has a big significance to Andhra Pradesh as it is expected to boost the irrigation and water supply in the region. The foundation stone for the project was laid in the combined Andhra Pradesh long back. Even after the state bifurcation and around 10 years to it the construction was not completed yet.

BJP is in power and many say that the saffron party has no interest in helping the project and lending a helping hand. The state wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party is also facing severe criticism over the Center not giving the required support for completing the project.

As a big development, the Union government is said to have given its nod for the financial support the Andhra Pradesh government had sought. As the funds received the permission, they are expected to reach the state government at the earliest. The massive funds would help in increasing the pace of construction work.

A review meeting was held on the Polavaram project and related issues recently where various matters were discussed. During the same, the Andhra Pradesh government requested the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti to grant Rs 17,144 crores as ad hoc amount so that the pace of construction works can be increased.

During the meeting, concerned officials informed the Jal Shakti Ministry about the issues with the project and how the estimation of the revised costs has increased. Other costs like Rehabilitation & Resettlement package should also be taken care of and the same was mentioned by the state officials during the key meeting.

The Polavaram Project is a multi-purpose irrigation project on the Godavari River and the project was accorded the National Project status. The backwater of the structure supports the neighboring states as well as the backwater spreads into states like Chhattisgarh and Odisha. The project was proposed to boost cultivation there and help the farmers.

Polavaram Project saw a big development in the combined state in 2004 when the then Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy performed the Bhoomi Pooja and sanctioned a big amount of funds for the construction.
