Proposal To Increase Marriage Age To 21 From 18 Cleared
By: Tupaki Desk | 16 Dec 2021 7:52 AM GMTThe Prime Minister Narendra Modi led Union government has been pushing the proposal to increase the minimum age of marriage for women from the existing 18 years. We got to know about this when Narendra Modi made a statement on the much-needed proposal while addressing the countrymen on Independence Day last year.
In what could be a shot in the arm for the efforts in this regard, the proposal which aims to increase the marriage age of women in the country to 21 years from the existing 18 years was reportedly cleared by the Union Cabinet.
It has been widely reported that the Union Cabinet met for a key meeting on Wednesday under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. When he spoke about the proposal, it was cleared by the Cabinet.
It has been widely reported that to bring the new proposal into effect, the Union Government is aiming to make a few changes in the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, Special Marriage Act, and the Hindu Marriage Act. This would give a big relief to women who want to pursue higher education.
The proposal was introduced in the Union Cabinet meeting on the grounds of the recommendations by the dedicated task force that was constituted by the Union government to look into various issues that are linked with the motherhood of women. As the task force had examined various issues and placed its recommendations, the same proposal was tabled before the Union Cabinet.
The dedicated panel also recommended that the topic of sex education should be introduced in the school curriculum so that the issue gets formalised.
Earlier last year, Narendra Modi announced that the government is looking into the issue of increasing the minimum age of marriage for women so that their health won't get impacted. The Government dubbed the effort as women empowerment.
The main intention behind planning to increase the marriage age of women is to see that women won't get affected by malnutrition and other issues. We are worried about the health of the women in the country, he said in the Independence speech.
