Regional parties use and throw Left parties

Time was when the Left parties had set the political agenda in the country. Though they were in power in a handful of states, they played a key role in determining the direction of the politics in the country. But, a series of inexplicable political errors and changed political discourse has made them irrelevant in politics.

The Left is in power in only Kerala, that too in a coalition with friendly parties. It is light years away from power in both West Bengal and Tripura, where it enjoyed power for over two decades. Today, the vote share of the Left parties is coming down considerably and they are in the danger of losing their national status.

Sadly, the rising BJP has obliterated the Left in both North and West India. In the East and South, the emergence of the regional parties has ensured that the Left is totally marginalised. Now the Left parties have ended up as mere political additives. They are being used by the mainstream parties to rake up agitations and create a narrative. The Left parties are dumped once the purpose is served.

The political opportunism of the regional parties too is sounding a death knell for the Left parties . For instance, in 2009, Chandrababu Naidu had an electoral alliance with the Left as part for the Maha Kutami. By 2014, he dumped the Left and latched on to the BJP bandwagon. The Jana Sena had a political alliance with the BJP in 2014 and then joined hands with the Left in 2019. Now, the alliance is all but broken. Thus, the Left parties have completely lost their relevance in Indian politics.
