Rohit Sharma All Set To Take Up Ajinkya Rahane's Position!
By: Tupaki Desk | 4 Dec 2021 5:59 AM GMTIs the cricket governing body Board of Control for Cricket in India(BBCI) having second thoughts on Ajinkya Rahane, the current vice-captain for the test format?. Are the plans underway to replace the right-handed batsman who is suffering from poor form off late, the media reports say yes.
Now what we hear from the media reports is that newly appointed T20 captain Hitman Rohit Sharma has a high chance of replacing Ajinkya Rahane as the deputy. However, the change in Rohit Sharma's position in the test team will take place for India's tour of South Africa for the Test series.
Quoting a top official from the BCCI as saying, a leading media outlet said that a key meeting to zero on the team selection for the South Africa series will be held soon and the team will be selected with Rohit Sharma as the vice-captain. An announcement would be made soon, the official said.
Ajinkya Rahane who was credited for leading the Test team in the absence of Virat Kohli and retaining the Border-Gavaskar trophy has been suffering from poor form. A century from his bat came long back in 2019 at home against South Africa. Since then, he has been out of the form.
Ajinkya Rahane failed to put up an impressive show in India's tour of England too. Having played seven innings, Rahane barely made 109 runs. His test average is close to 36 since 2015, despite a century. In the first test with New Zealand too, he couldn't produce fireworks.
However, India's tour of South Africa is likely to get postponed and might not be played as per the schedule in the wake of the Omicron scare in the nation. It is also said that the number of matches played in the series is likely to be cut short.
The talks between the BCCI and Cricket South Africa (CSA) are underway to finalise the matches in the series. Once the two cricket boards close the discussions, we can expect an official statement on the much-awaited series. The Indian team is looking stronger with young guns Shreyas Iyer and Mayank Agarwal showing their class in the ongoing New Zealand series.
