The saffron party Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) which didn't have power and representation in many states before 2014 had surprised everyone by taking on the mighty Congress party. Not just taking, BJP even crushed the grand old party and went on to form the government at the centre.

The intense social media campaign and the aggressive campaign helped the party to win power. In recent times, BJP has been accused of using social media platforms to spread hatred between the communities. A few noted media outlets in the western countries had said the same on various occasions.

Raising the same issue of social media platforms being the stage for harming social harmony, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi gave a fierce speech in Lok Sabha today. She went all guns open against the social media platforms and blasted them.

Mentioning the reports of major international news outlets, Sonia Gandhi had claimed that the likes of Facebook and others are causing great damage to democracy and social harmony and sought an end to this.

Sonia Gandhi alleged that the social media platforms are serving as the stage for the political narratives and the platforms helping parties like BJP is a great threat to India which is the largest democracy in the world.

In her speech which had rocked the Lok Sabha, the Gandhi family member Sonia Gandhi had highlighted how the western media claimed that compared to the other parties, BJP was offered the poll advertisements at lesser prices,

Sonia Gandhi went on to say that these reports shed light on how the anti-government voices are being targeted on social media which shows that the social media giants have something to do with the BJP. These social media platforms are hacking democracy, which is not good for the country, Sonia Gandhi said.

It's high time that we safeguard social harmony and democracy in this country. For this, we have to make sure that these platforms will not interfere in politics and spread the narratives. This can be achieved only if the government puts a full stop to this. No matter who is in power, the practice should not be encouraged, Sonia Gandhi said.
