Super Response For Free Bus Travel For Women!

The grand old Congress party won the recent Karnataka elections with a supermajority. The freebies announced by the party played a big role in the victory. After the election win, we heard a few incidents of people refusing to pay the current bill as the Congress party announced free current of up to 200 units. Zero-fare tickets for women is also another promise Congress made.

The Shakti Scheme which aims at free travel for women in Karnataka buses was started on Sunday. Barring AC and luxury buses, women can travel in other buses. The free ticket is applicable for Karnataka women in KSRTC and BMTC buses for up to 20 km inside the state.

The state government held a big ceremony to start the policy. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy DK Shivakumar distributed free passes to a few women on the occasion. Rahul Gandhi also took to social media to express his happiness about starting the scheme and said that another scheme was fulfilled.

In just a couple of days, the free travel scheme saw a super response with lakhs of women availing of it. As per the information, more than 46 lakh women used the scheme. Women traveled in different RTC buses after the scheme was launched in the state. The scheme is restricted to only ordinary RTC buses and not premium services.

Special Shakti smart cards are released so that women can travel in buses. Women can get cards through sevasindhu.karnataka.gov. For this, they have to show proof that they are locals and they are living in the state. At the time of travel, women might also be asked to show some sort of proof.

Usually, we see signs on buses that women should let sit in the seats that are reserved for them. But things are different in Karnataka and there are signs on buses that there are a few reserved seats for men. While the free ticket policy was started in the state in the RTC buses, many say that the policy should not be given to everyone and that people from poor economic backgrounds should be allowed to avail of the offer.
