The top court in the country Supreme Court gave a sensational verdict in the assassination case of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Earlier today, the Apex Court issued orders saying that the convicts in the case would be released by the prison who were slapped with life terms earlier.

The Tamil Nadu government was in favour of releasing the convicts and the Gandhi family also supported this. Following this, the bench of justices Justices BR Gavai and BV Nagarathna issued orders to release the convicts in the case Nalini, Santhan, Murugan, Sriharan, Robert Payas, and Ravichandran from prison.

The six convicts have moved the Supreme Court a few times seeking orders for their release from jail. As the Madras High Court did not take any call on this they knocked on the doors of the Supreme Court. The bench of justices heard the petition and gave the orders.

After considering various issues the Supreme Court gave the orders. The Apex Court also considered the opinions of the defendants in the case and then gave its orders and said that the orders issued by the bench while releasing A.G. Perarivalan will apply to the six convicts.

The then Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi was killed in a suicide bomb attack in May 1991. While he reached Sriperumbudur for an election rally he was killed. The militant organisation Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam(LTTE) was behind the plan and carried out the attack killing the Prime Minister, a Gandhi family scion.

A few years after the incident the investigating officers produced the accused before the court and the Supreme Court slapped them with the death penalty. Later it was changed to life imprisonment. Hearing the petition the Supreme Court has now let them walk out of the jail.

Not happy with Rajiv Gandhi supporting the Sri Lankan government in the civil war between the government and the immigrant Tamil people, Sri Lanka-based Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam which was set up to fight for the rights of Tamil people planned the attack and killed him. On the pretext of giving him a garland, a woman activated her bomb.
