Three top T BJP leaders go empty-handed

The Telangana BJP leaders were sullen and silent on Wednesday when none of them found place in the list of the BJP candidates for the Rajya Sabha seats. There were seats up for grabs and the Telangana BJP leaders hoped that the party would nominate at least one among them to the Rajya Sabha.

They felt that the BJP would do so as it wants to have a foothold in South India, especially after the Karnataka defeat and the change of guard in Telangana BJP organization. The names of seniors like Muralidhar Rao, actress Vijayasanthi and former MP Garikapati Mohan Rao were doing rounds. However, not one of them could make it to the list.

If sources are to be believed, Muralidhar Rao's candidature was ruled out as the leadership is upset with his recent off-the-cuff remarks on the winning chances of the party in Telangana. Over the years, the importance of Muralidhar Rao has gradually been diminished. Despite being the prabhari of poll-bound Madhya Pradesh, Muralidhar Rao is rarely seen in that state and is not seen in any of the key strategy meets.

Vijayasanthi and Garikapati are being seen largely as armchair politicians, who are confined to some meetings and rarely are seen in grassroots activism. Meanwhile, the party has given tickets to loyalists from Gujarat, West Bengal and also to Union Minister for External Affairs Jaishankar. There would be bypolls to 10 seats, of which the BJP hopes to win at least 5.
