UK PM Race: Indian-Origin Rishi Falls Short of Finish Line

In what could have been a historic moment, we might have seen an Indian-origin person becoming the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He came very close to the Prime Minister's post and even reached the last test. Unfortunately, he fell short of the post and lost the elections.

Indian origin Rishi Sunak who gave tough competition in the UK Prime Minister elections lost to UK foreign secretary Liz Truss. Compared to Rishi Sunak, Truss received a big number of votes and she defeated Sunak with a big margin of over 20000 votes.

Rishi Sunak was one of the favorites to win the polls. A few media outlets even compared him with former United States President Barak Obama and said that Rishi Sunak might repeat history. But he could not. While Liz Truss received as many as 81,326 votes, Rishi Sunak managed to get 60,399 votes.

However, there is also criticism that some of the leading media outlets in the country strongly promoted Liz Truss and supported her campaign which made a difference. Rishi Sunak supporters and a few MPs in the party also alleged that a few dailies did a campaign on whether the United Kingdom is ready for an Asian Prime Minister and this might have created local and non-local sentiments.

Despite losing the elections, Rishi Sunak displayed his maturity by saying that the Conservatives are one family and everyone should Liz Truss as she is now the Prime Minister of the nation.

"Thank you to everyone who voted for me in this campaign. I've said throughout that the Conservatives are one family. It's right we now unite behind the new PM, Liz Truss, as she steers the country through difficult times," Rishi Sunak said on Twitter after the election loss.

On the other hand, the contrasting views of Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss are also said to have played a part in the election result. To give relief to the people from the taxes, Liz Truss proposed the idea of cutting down the taxes. On the flip side, Rishi Sunak said the economy is not in a good shape, and cutting down the taxes is not a good idea.
