Going by the election notification given by the Election Commission of India(ECI), the general elections in the poll-bound states have started. In a phased manner, the elections are underway in the largest state of India, Uttar Pradesh. The fourth phase of the elections covering 59 Assembly constituencies has started today and is in progress.

Marking the fourth phase of the general elections, the political reform organisation Association for Democratic Reforms(ADR) had released a shocking report on the criminal background of the candidates who are running the polls. The criminal cases filed against the leaders include serious criminal offenses.

After going through the election affidavits filed by 621 candidates, the ADR had compiled the report which says that 167 contestants have criminal cases filed against them, while 129 candidates have serious criminal cases like rape and murder filed against them.

What's even more shocking is that, in major constituencies, multiple candidates ruling the elections from the same constituency have criminal cases.

If we segregate the cases that deal with serious cases, as many as 11 candidates are facing 'attempt to murder cases, while five candidates and two candidates face murder charges and rape charges respectively.

Almost all the political parties have fielded candidates with criminal cases. The Uttar Pradesh based party Samajwadi Party has the highest percentage of candidates with criminals running the polls in the ongoing phase with 39 percent followed by grand old party(38 percent), Bahujan Samaj Party(37 percent), Bharatiya Janata Party (30 percent), and Aam Aadmi Party with 20 percent.

The reports also shed light on the rich candidates who declared themselves as crorepatis. Around 37 percent of the candidates are rich and they own properties worth over a crore. These rich candidates hail from all the major political parties.

Delhi-based Aam Aadmi Party, which is ruling in the national capital is slowly focusing on increasing its footprint in other states as well. For the same reason, AAP is contesting the general elections in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. Talking about Uttar Pradesh, both costliest and poor candidates belong to the Aam Aadmi Party.

Given the vast area in Uttar Pradesh, the elections in the state will be held in seven phases. The remaining three phases will be held on February 23, 27, March 3, and 7th respectively. The statewide vote counting will be conducted on the 10th of March.
