Will BRS implement 33 percent reservation for women within party?

The ruling TRS in Telangana has decided to take up the issue of women's reservations in parliament and the assemblies. Party MLC Kavitha Kalwakuntla is organizing a protest-dharna at Delhi's Jantar Mantar on this issue. To support Kavitha's demand, several BRS leaders, including ministers, are already in Delhi.

But, what is the stance of the ruling BRS in Telangana on the issue of adequate representation to women? The BRS record in this regard is none too encouraging. The BRS has neither come out in support of the women's reservation bill nor passed a resolution expressing its support to the demand.

Though the party demands 33 percent reservations in lok sabha and the assemblies and its election manifestos talk about it, the party did not give adequate representation to women. In 2014, the party gave tickets to only six women. In 2018, the number came down to four. In the first term after the 2018 elections, there was no woman minister in KCR cabinet. Only Padma Devender Reddy was made the deputy speaker. In the later reshuffle, two women -Sabitha Indra Reddy and Satyavati Rathod – were made ministers.

Even in Parliament, the number of TRS woman MPs never exceeded more than 1. In 2014, Kavitha Kalwakuntla was the sole female MP. This time around in 2019, only Maloth Kavitha is a female MP. The BRS critics are asking the BRS to set its house in order and give 33 per cent reservation within the party organization before attacking the Central government.
