Will By-elections Be Held In Secunderabad Cantonment Seat?
By: Tupaki Desk | 20 Feb 2023 9:00 PM ISTElecting the representative is the key aspect of democracy and being one of the biggest democracies in the world, elections are crucial in India. Voters vote for the leader they like. By-elections are also important to fill vacant places. The election commission conducts a by-election if the elected member dies or resigns from the post.
An MLA seat in Telangana is in the discussion to see if the by-election will be held or not. It is known that Sayanna who left a big mark as the Cantonment MLA passed away recently due to a prolonged illness. He passed away on Sunday and he was 72 when he breathed his last.
Usually, the by-election is held when it becomes vacant. But the situation here is such that the possibility of going by the by-election is very thin. The guidelines say that the tenure of a by-election should not be less than one year. If the elections are to be held with a tenure that lasts less than one year then the Election commission has to discuss this with the union government.
Even if the Election Commission approaches the Supreme Court, there is no surety if BJP gives it a nod. If we look at the by-elections that were held in Telangana in the recent past, the Bharatiya Janata Party either won the polls or gave a tough fight to the ruling party.
But the Secunderabad Cantonment constituency is not like others and Sayanna has been serving as the MLA for five terms. As he joined the TRS after the state bifurcation, the ruling party there became strong.
So the chances of winning the elections here are next to impossible for the Bharatiya Janata Party. No one can assure that the party will approve to go for the elections.
Telangana will go for the general elections this year and by the end of this year, the schedule would be announced. So if the Secunderabad Cantonment constituency goes for the by-election, then the new MLA would render his/her services for less than three or four months. This says that the Election commission might not hold the elections. If the election has to be held then we might see the by-elections along with the Karnataka elections.
Sayanna was a Telugu Desam Party. He started his career with the grand old party. He tried his luck in the GHMC elections by contesting as a Corporator. But he lost the elections. Then he contested the elections from the Secunderabad Cantonment constituency in 1994, 1999, and 2004. He lost the 2009 polls and won the elections in 2014 and 18. He joined the TRS in 2016.
