Will this move of Jagan may YSRCP chances in tribal seats?
By: Tupaki Desk | 12 April 2023 4:54 PM ISTThe issue of inclusion of Benthu Odiyas, Boyas and Valmikis in the ST list has turned out to be a headache for the YSRCP government. The tribals, who are opposing this decision and the GO No 52 issued for the purpose, are on a warpath. Recently, they obstructed Rampachodavaram YSRCP MLA Dhanalakshmi and demanded that the she resign from her post in protest.
They stopped the MLA who was on a visit to the constituency and asked her to clarify on her stand on the issue of GO 52. They said that the tribals would be at a serious loss if the GO was implemented. They wanted the MLA to resign from her post to express her solidarity with the tribals. They said the move to include these three communities was anti-tribal.
The MLA initially tried to argue with them. At one stage, she went ballistic and said that the protesters were pro-TDP elements. She said that the TDP was inciting people to protest against the YSRCP government. At this, the tribals told her categorically that they were not politically inclined and added that they were protesting only because the tribal interests were being jeopardised.
Interestingly, the tribal community has unequivocally backed the YSRCP. The party had won all the ST reserved seats in the state in the 2019 elections. Even in 2014, the party had won all but one seats from the tribal areas. The latest move, however, is threatening to hit at the root of the support to the YSRCP in the tribal regions of the state.
