Shocker: Software Jobs Gone In 12 Months?
However, the prediction has raised concerns about job security, skill relevance, and how quickly the workforce can adapt to such change.
By: Tupaki Desk | 21 Jan 2026 11:24 PM ISTIt is an established fact that the IT and software sector has the highest employment based across the globe and is a major source of revenue in India for the general public. However, due to the automation and AI, the advancement of the software industry has been going down considerably.
Now, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has sparked wide debate in the tech world with his prediction that software engineering could be largely automated within the next 6 to 12 months. Speaking about the rapid pace of artificial intelligence development, Amodei said future AI models may be capable of doing most, and possibly all, of what software engineers currently handle from start to finish.
According to him, AI systems are progressing beyond simple code suggestions and bug fixes. He believes upcoming models will be able to understand product requirements, design system architecture, write complete codebases, test software, fix errors, and even deploy applications with minimal human involvement.
If this happens, the role of software engineers may shift significantly. Instead of writing code line by line, engineers could become reviewers and editors, focusing on guiding AI output, checking quality, and making final decisions.
Amodei stressed that this shift does not necessarily mean engineers will become irrelevant. Rather, their responsibilities may evolve toward higher level thinking, problem framing, and oversight. However, the prediction has raised concerns about job security, skill relevance, and how quickly the workforce can adapt to such change.
While some experts believe the timeline may be overly optimistic, others agree that AI driven automation in software development is accelerating faster than expected. The coming year could be critical in redefining how software is built and who builds it.
