While going through social media and watching YouTube videos we see ads that promote online betting. The consumption of YouTube content increased of late and these platforms have celebrities as promoters. These ads highlight the names of the celebrities who are promoting it.

Social media influencers often tie up with these apps and play the ads in their content. Now a regulatory body has come up with sensational orders that say that promoting betting apps and gambling will not be tolerated.

Regulatory body Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) came up with a new advisory saying that illegal betting and gambling activities cannot be promoted. Saying that the activities are being promoted and hence there is a need to end this.

Saying that the promotion of these activities is illegal and is concerning, the body directed the platforms, celebrities, and influencers to stop promoting the activities. Having issued the directives, the body warned of stringent action if the promotion is not stopped.

The Indian government has been focusing on fighting the promotion of illegal betting and promotion. For this, the Prevention of Misleading Advertisements and Endorsements for Misleading Advertisements, 2022 was brought.

This is not the first time concerns have been raised about celebrities promoting the apps. Earlier, the High Court slammed a few Cricketers and former cricketers for being the promoters of the betting apps and asked how they could do such things.
