It has won on the strength of the Muslim votes in the state, but does not have even a single Muslim MLA. As a result, there is no muslim MLA who could be made a minister in the state cabinet. Both the Muslim candidates of the party – MA Shabbir, Mohammed Azharuddin and Mohammed Riaz Khan have lost the elections.
The party has already made Shabbir Ali a cabinet rank advisor to the government. Now to have a Muslim minister, it has to make a Muslim MLC first. Now that there are bypolls to the legislative council, the party has to nominate someone from the Muslim community and make him a minister. The party is already on the lookout for such a suitable candidate.
If sources are to be believed, the Congress Party has shortlisted possible MLC candidates from the Muslim community. The party sources reveal that the name of Mohammed Riaz, a senior leader of the party from Warangal, could be the choice of the party for the minister’s post. Riaz is currently the official spokesperson of the party.
Riaz has been arrested during the KCR regime and several cases were booked against him. He played a key role in mobilizing the unemployed youth in support of the Congress Party. The party is likely to nominate him as the MLC first and then make him a minister to fill the minority quota.
