Shamsher:
The world is witnessing the fine performance of Team India bowler Mohammed Shami in the ongoing World Cup. No one expected that he would be in the final squad of the World Cup. But Hardik Pandya's injury and Hyderabadi pacer Mohammed Siraj's struggles opened the doors for him. He proved the selection right by claiming a fifer against New Zealand and winning the Man Of the Match award. He impressed everyone with his bowling against England. Even renowned all-rounder Ben Stokes struggled against him. With a beautiful in-swinger, he sent Ben Stokes back to the pavilion.
Arrived In Fashion:
Shami was not taken into the squad for the first four matches due to the team's orchestration. Thinking that batting would be weak if Shami was taken as the third bowler, he was not taken. As the team has Hardik Pandya and Mohammed Siraj, Shami was ignored. Pandya's injury and all-rounder Shardul Thakur's failure benefited him. The move worked well for the party. It would not be an exaggeration to say we might have even lost to New Zealand and England.
Shami started his career in 2013 and impressed everyone with his debut match. In the Test match against West Indies the same year, he claimed 9 (4+5) wickets. In the ODI played against Pakistan before this, he bowled nine overs and four were maidens. By conceding just 23 runs he claimed a wicket. His career would have been at its peak had he continued the same. But fate had other plans. Issues started popping up between him and his wife Hasin Jahan. In 2017-18, he faced domestic violence cases and even faced fixing allegations. Shami even developed suicidal thoughts. He met with an accident.
Shami's career was in trouble in 2018. BCCI's contract was also kept on hold. In an interview, he burst into tears. Despite coming clean from the fixing allegations Delhi Capitals team did not retain him. But he stood strong and came back as a champion. In the same year 2019 in which Delhi Capitals did not retain him, he bowled 177.2 overs in 21 ODIs and claimed 42 wickets. Despite this, he was not given a chance in the 2020 team which recorded a historic win against Australia. He set up a ground in his form house in Amroha and practiced there. He and his brother Mohammed Kaif prepared the picth. He practiced with players who shined in Under-19 and Under-23. To have strong legs, he used to run in fields.
Shami played a key role in the Gujarat Titans team becoming the IPL trophy winner in 2022. He had a good run with the team this year as well. He played 14 ODIs this year and claimed 28 wickets. In the World Cup, he took nine matches in just two matches. Six out of them were clean bowled. He is 33 now and took 229 wickets(64 tests), 180 wickets(96 ODIs) and 24 wickets(23 T20s). Given his fitness, he can play for three more years. He is very close to reaching the milestone of 500 wickets across formats.
He played 96 ODIs so far and he would complete 100 ODIs in the World Cup. If he plays the final as well then it becomes a 101 match. Fans pinned high hopes on him that he would continue the form and get the World Cup for India.
