The demand to get legal status for same-sex marriages is not new and we have been hearing about this for a very long time. However, the demand for this is getting momentum as the activists and supporters are exploring all the options to add intensity to the fight.

Of late more and more petitions are being filed with the Courts hoping that their fight will get a big support. The top court in the country, the Supreme Court which reserved its verdict on a bunch of petitions had announced its verdict today. However, the petitioners did not get a positive verdict.

The five-judge bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud which comprised Justices SK Kaul, SR Bhat, Hima Kohli, and PS Narasimha gave the verdict and said that legal recognition cannot be granted to same marriages.

The CJI said that it is not the work of the Courts to change the law and it is the work of the Parliament. Having said that the CJI observed the court can only interpret when the Parliament makes any law. Despite saying no to the legal status of same-sex marriages, the CJI observed that no one should be discriminated against on any grounds.

The Chief Justice of India also directed the Union government to set up a committee to look into this. After giving directives to set up a committee, the CJI said that the rights and entitlements of the queer unions should be decided.

The activists and petitioners who were shocked by this said that they were disappointed. However, they said that they maintained they would keep fighting to get a positive outcome. They also said that they would think about how to go forward.

It has to be mentioned here that the Union government earlier made its stand clear on this. The Center said that they are against the demand and that same-sex marriage and heterosexual marriages cannot be seen as one.
