By: Tupaki Desk | 19 Sep 2023 8:50 AM GMTElections are just over two months away in Telangana. The BRS party already announced the candidates barring just four seats. The Congress party is also expected to announce the candidates soon. BJP is busy accepting applications from aspirants.BSP and the left are gearing up for elections. The ruling BRS which is in a good position announced the candidates way before. However, the party is facing a big issue in the form of the Women's Reservation Bill.
What’s the situation? The bill to grant 33 percent reservation for women in the houses has been pending for 27 years. But the issue is seeing a movement now. The bill was passed in the upper house Rajya Sabha long back. Only Lok Sabha is left. The bill passed the Rajya Sabha, where the BJP has no strength. Only Lok Sabha is pending, where BJP enjoys big strength. It is not tough for the BJP to pass this. The President's nod is the next phase. Then the bill becomes a law and reservation for women in the houses becomes effective.
What About The Candidates?
The BRS announced the candidates one month back. If the Women’s Reservation Bill becomes effective, then 33 percent of seats should be allotted to women. 39 seats go to women candidates. Not just the BRS, but the other parties can also not allot these many seats.
Reports are abuzz that there is a chance of increasing the seating capacity for the members with the reservation bill and the seat capacity would also be increased. There is a chance of bringing the bill after making the required changes. On the other hand, the implementation date or year of the bill can be specified and the implementation can be started. Looking at these developments, BRS might not get a situation to change the candidates.
Anything can happen in this as the Narendra Modi government is in power. There is a possibility of adjourning the Assembly elections in states in the name of the Women’s Reservation Bill. The Assemblies in the Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled states might be dissolved and might go for Jamili elections. On the other hand, former President Ram Nath Kovind’s committee is working on the Jamili elections.
