It's now a swansong for senior Telugu politician and BJP biggie M Venkaiah Naidu. With the BJP top brass showing no inclination to make him the president of the country, Venkaiah Naidu may have to walk into political sunset after his term expires in July. If sources are to be believed, he would settle in Andhra Pradesh and would take care of the Swarna Bharathi Trust, which he has floated to undertake social service activities.
A section fondly believed that Modi will elevate him and make him the presidential candidate. However, PM Modi rooted for Draupadi Murmu, a tribal woman, for the post of Rashtrapati. This has also precluded the possibility of another term as the vice president for Venkaiah as Draupadi Murmu is way too junior for Venkaiah Naidu to work under her.
Venkaiah Naidu's son Harsha Muppavarapu is an entrepreneur and has a Toyota dealership based in Vizag. Venkaiah's daughter Deepa Venkat is a social activist and runs the Swarna Bharathi Trust, which has activities spread all across the two Telugu states. Venkaiah is likely to be the prime attraction in the Telugu literary and social circles after his retirement as the vice president.
Venkaiah began as an RSS activist and became quite active in the Jai Andhra agitation of 1971. Later, he joined the Janata Party and became an MLA from Udayagiri. He then had a long legislative and parliamentary career and served as the BJP national president, parliamentary affairs minister, union urban and rural development minister. He was made the vice president in 2017 and also served as the chairperson of the Rajya Sabha.
