Increasing the political heat in the state, the ruling party decided to change the name of the NTR Health University located in temple city Vijayawada to YSR Health University stating that YSR took many pro-poor initiatives and it will be appropriate to name the University after the Chief Minister’s father YSR, who was a former Chief Minister.
The decision is drawing sharp reactions from various corners. The Telugu Desam Party leaders and supporters are breathing fire on the YSRCP over the decision. They are asking how the University can be named after YSR, who has nothing to do with the university as it was conceptualized by NTR.
Now the Andhra Pradesh government faced a big blow as Andhra Pradesh Official Languages Commission Chairman Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad stepped down from the post in a bid to protest against the government’s decision. Yarlagadda also announced his resignation from the AP Hindi Academy chairman position.
It is no wonder that Yarlagadda stepped down from his positions given his strong ties with the grand old party. He was nominated to Rajya Sabha by the Telugu Desam Party given the support he gave to the grand old party. When NTR focused on national politics to start a front against Congress by bringing all the opposition parties under one roof, Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad helped NTR in making his Hindi better.
A Telugu person talking with Hindi leaders from various regions who speak a wide range of dialects is not a small thing and NTR managed to communicate to national leaders and leaders from other southern states.
Without Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad, NTR would have not achieved what he did so he can be seen as a strong force that supported NTR, who founded the Telugu Desam Party to fight for the self-respect of the Telugu community. Just like in state politics, NTR also shined in national politics.
As a return gift for his services, he was nominated to the Rajya Sabha. Without a doubt, changing the name of NTR Health University to YSR Health University will make Yarlagadda angry and as a result, he stepped down from the posts he holds.
