TDP suffers candidate crunch in Seema, North Andhra

A reality-check appears to be necessary for the TDP, which is particularly exuberant after the recent Mahanadu. The Mahanadu saw an enthusiastic turnout. There is no doubt that Chandrababu showered the same sops galore that he had been criticizing all along. The party is also gung-ho about the recent victory in the graduate constituency MLC elections.

But, what about the ground situation? The reality is that the TDP today does not have 175 proper, fighting-fit candidates to contest the elections next year. In several constituencies, ex-MLAs and other key constituency level leaders had already switched sides. Also, there is a serious erosion of the party’s support base at the grassroots level.

An internal assessment of the situation by the TDP shows that the party is suffering from the serious shortage of suitable candidates in the Rayalaseema region. In the North Andhra too, there are several problem constituencies, where the party does not have winnable candidates who can give the YSRCP a run for its money.

The TDP is slightly better off in the central coastal Andhra region, which has always been the bastion of the TDP. In fact, the TDP was born in this hinterland of coastal Andhra region. So, the party sure has reasonably strong candidates in the districts of twin Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam and Nellore. But elsewhere, the party is still in search of strong and winnable candidates, admit TDP insiders.
