The grand old Congress Party has always been led by the members of the mighty Gandhi family since its inception. Unanimously, Gandhi family members have been elected as the supremo of the party. But the status quo is set to be changed as the party announced elections to select the chief who will lead the party.

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, who earlier demanded big changes in the party is said to be showing interest in running the polls to be the chief of the party. It is also said that the MP met interim President Sonia Gandhi and sought her blessings.

Shashi Tharoor's meeting with Sonia Gandhi raised many eyeballs as it is said that a Chief Minister is also showing interest to run for the polls to lead the grand old party. As per the reports, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot might also run the polls to be the supremo of the grand old party.

If both congressmen try their luck in the presidential poll of the party, then we might see star leaders locking horns with each other. This could be the first time that leaders outside the Gandhi family running the polls to lead the party which is going through a big crisis.

Experts say that Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot is dubbed the favorite candidate to run the polls as he has been with the grand old party for a long time. He is also known for his close relations with the Gandhi family.

The majority of Congress party leaders want Gandhi's family member to be the chief of the party. With Rahul Gandhi not showing interest in running the polls to lead the party, the members might vote for the candidate who is a close aide of the Gandhi family and Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot might benefit from the trend.

As the Chief Minister might emerge victorious in the presidential polls of the opposition party, Shashi Tharoor reportedly met Sonia Gandhi to seek her support so that his winning chances might increase and he will give tough competition to Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot in the upcoming polls.
