Will Amit Shah face steel plant protests when he visits Vizag?

The BJP is planning a big Amit Shah rally in Vizag on June 10 and 11. While this is part of the BJP's plan to celebrate its 9 years in power at the Centre, the programme is also being seen as a show of strength by the party in Andhra Pradesh. The BJP cadres are trying to mobilise at least 50000 persons to the public meeting. The meeting is also significant as state assembly elections too are less than a year away.

However, the BJP appears to have not taken into account the ongoing agitation against the move to privatise the Vizag Steel Plant. For the past 850 days, the employees and the civil society organisations are staging protests opposing the privatization of the VSP. They also have the support of various voluntary organisations working in the area.

There are expectations from the unions, employees and the civil society organisations that Amit Shah should speak about the privatization of the VSP. They want him to categorically say that there would be no privatization. However, given the BJP government's stand for privatization, it is likely that Amit Shah will either skip the subject or bluntly slam the protests.

If sources are to be believed, the protesters are planning to show their strength to Amit Shah when he visits Vizag. They are planning to organize protests at the steel plant gate. Sources also say that some unions might even attend the public meeting and chant slogans when Amit Shah begins to address the party workers.
