What are reputation projects - those projects or works that few successful people tend to get based on their previous works than their present state and status.
For Telugu directors, becoming a brand has been the biggest task following the examples of K. Raghavendra Rao, Dasari Narayana Rao, EVV Satyanarayana, Ram Gopal Verma.
Because these directors could get big producers to sign them and big actors to act in their films based on their reputation despite of flops.
Dasari did not look to take Chiranjeevi, Nagarjuna, Venkatesh in his movies after making one film with each as he believed in his brand and medium budget than big budget films.
Raghavendra Rao on the other carved a niche for himself in commercial cinema and gave hits to everyone without thinking about big and small budgets.
Ram Gopal Verma broke the norm and that still helping him to survive in the films. EVV is the only predominantly comedy film director who could direct a movie each with Top 4 from last generation.
They all survived longer even they delivered flops as their reputation helped them to find another big project and they used click big time again.
B. Gopal, Kodi Ramakrishna, Kondarami Reddy who once were seen as big directors couldn't last that long after they started giving flops even though they had given memorable hits as their reputation isn't as big as the above mentioned others.
Vamsy, Krishnavamsi also became brands but their longevity ended with one or two disasters. They occasionally could make a comeback but still failed to see the heights once they did.
Today, such reputations seem not to work. Raghavandra Rao got a film with Chiranjeevi even after a flop or disaster. Dasari could make ten flop films but one hit would have made distributors run to buy his film again.
But the sustaining director brands like of today like Trivikram Srinivas, Sukumar, VV Vinayak and Puri Jagannadh seem to unable to find a project just based on their name.
Allu Arjun is still waiting for full script before he officially announces his next with Trivikram. Mahesh is waiting for Sukumar to come up with a script that impresses him even though Sukumar gave Rangasthalam.
Others are struggling to even find a hero who will listen to them. Srinu Vaitla made such a bad film with Ravi Teja that we doubt any other hero will at least give him time.
In 80's or 90's, heroes like Krishna, Sobhan Babu, Krishnam Raju would have blindly reported sets after knowing their characters based on director and team assembled's reputation. But now, that will no longer be the case. Script comes first not the reputation.
As the stakes have grown bigger and each director proved that they can go completely wrong and deliver big disasters, the brand names are not helping them as they would have once. Still, SS Rajamouli might turn out to be an exception for this new norm as he just grew beyond imagination!
