Music: NS Prasu

Director Neelakantha made 'Show' two decades back which earned two National Awards. He then made some interesting movies like 'Missamma'. But his movies lacked commercial success which made him disappear for a long time. After a long time, he made 'Circle' which arrived on Friday. Let us see how it turned out.
Story:
Kailash (Sai Ronak) is a fashion photographer. He is addicted to alcohol and he gets captured by a contract killer called Puttur Ganesh (Baba Bhaskar). Ganesh explains his principle of leaving Kailash along if he makes an agreement with the person who gave him orders to kill. Ganesh asks Kailash to guess the person who gave him the contract. Kailash guesses that is one of his ex-girlfriends and starts explaining his story to Ganesh. What are the three stories? Did one of the lovers really gave the contract to kill Kailash? What happens at the end? The answers to these questions form the rest of the story.
Analysis:
The film's tagline translates to 'No one knows how, when and why people become enemies'. Reading the plotline of 'Circle' and looking at the tagline, one expects a thrilling movie from Neelakantha who made memorable movies like 'Show' and 'Missamma'. But the director who was once called as 'Screenplay master' has completely lost his Midas touch and 'Circle' is a big example of it. Though the story sounded impressive, the lack of Neelakantha mark magic made 'Circle' an average flick with not many positives. These days, the makers are readying a twist at the end and making films relying on that. But the audience are not foolish to go through all the boring parts throughout the movie and get surprised by the twist at the end.
'Circle' is a thriller for name sake but it is filled with romantic tracks. The beginning parts which involve the hero getting kidnapped and the conversations between them have a thriller feel to them but things take a turn once the romance takes the front seat. The three romantic tracks took up the majority of the movie. Only the track involving heroine Naina manages to capture the attention of the audience. But it is quite short. The first and the last romantic tracks are huge disappointments. The love scenes may engage the youth to a certain extent but the proceedings do not excite you. Mainly, the third love story which was made with a lot of detail and attention will surely bore the audience.
Since it is a thriller film, it became a mandatory to give a twist in the end which is why the makers kept the guessing game for the person who gave the contract intact till the end. While the twist is quite shocking, it lacks logic and practicality. One cannot simply change their opinion on the second half with a single decent twist. The engaging screenplay which is a necessity for such thriller films is not present in this film. While Neelakantha penned a story that is trendy to the current generation, he lacked the required pace in narration. He failed to create any magic and 'Circle' did not meet the expectations of a thriller film.
Performances:
Sai Ronak did well as a lead actor. He suited perfectly as Kailash and his getup suited him as well. He showcased good variations too. Baba Bhaskar is okay as a contract killer. Due to his fun image on the small screen, it takes time to get used to seeing him in this role. We get a feeling that a serious actor should have done more justice to it. Richa Panai disappoints you while Naina did a good job. Arshin Mehta is okay as well and there are no notable other characters in the movie.
Technicians:
Neelakantha's films are always rich in technical quality. NS Prasu's songs and background score are quite decent. Ranganath Gogineni's cinematography is one of the highlights of this movie. The visuals are always attractive and the quality is visible despite the limited budget. Production values are adequate. Neelakantha is the reason why many turned towards this film. Though he made films way ahead of his time two decades ago couldn't make a trendy film this time. His mark brilliance was missing this time and his touch is nowhere to be seen in the screenplay.
Verdict: 'Circle' - Not A Neelakantha Show!
Rating: 2/5
