Distributors Happy With Failure Of OTT Releases!

Update: 2020-06-22 04:45 GMT
From the past few weeks, all the talk in tinsel town is about how OTT platforms are going to affect the theatre business. With the big screens completely shut down, few filmmakers decided to release their films directly on digital platforms. Despite the protests from the exhibitors, they sold their films to the streaming sites for fancy rates.

Many thought that it is going to be the beginning of the end of the theatre business but the reality proved them wrong. Till now, three noted films released on OTT platforms. While the biggest of the lot in Amitabh Bachchan and Ayshmann Khurrana's 'Gulabo Sitabo', the other two are Keerthy Suresh's trilingual 'Penguin' and Jyothika's Tamil flick 'Ponmagal Vandhal'. All the three of them were released in Amazon Prime Video and the response till now have been underwhelming, to say the least.

They got negative response from the critics and audience alike. Since digital companies don't reveal the actual numbers of these films, there is no way people can know how many views it gathered or how many new subscribers it bought.

Taking the negative feedback as the measure, the exhibitors and distributors are enjoying the failure of these films. For them, this lack of response indirectly indicates that people are still connected to theatres and may flock to the halls once they are opened again. There is no sign of opening the theatres for the next few months due to the rapid increase of the virus affected cases.
