Controversy surrounding Tax Evasion by Mahesh Babu has finally come to an end. The Actor has paid the dues to rule out scope for further damage of his image.
Actually, Tax Officials served notice to Mahesh Babu in the year 2010 over evasion of Rs 18.5 lakh tax. Mahesh Babu approached the Central Excise & Service Tax Tribunal but wasn't able to get a favourable judgement. Even High Court turned down the appeal of the Actor to issue a stay on Tribunal verdict in September this year. Following which, Hyderabad GST Commissionerate freezed two bank accounts of Mahesh Babu as per Section 87 of the 1994 Finance Act.
Total dues went up to Rs 73.5 lakh with the addition of penalty and interest. Rs 42.96 lakh were recovered from one of the two bank accounts already. And now, Mahesh Babu came forward to settle the balance amount. He sent a DD of 31,47,994 to the GST Department through his Auditor.
Payment made by Mahesh Babu gives an impression that the argument made by his Legal Team in the legal notice served to GST Commissioner is a mere publicity stunt. This situation wouldn't have arised had if Mahesh paid Rs 18.5 lakh in 2010 itself.
