Tamil Cinema Legend Bharathiraja Passes Away at 84
He was admitted to the hospital in late 2025 because of respiratory complications and received treatment again earlier this year.
Veteran filmmaker and actor Bharathiraja, one of the most respected names in Tamil cinema, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 84. He died at his home in Chennai after facing age-related health problems for a long time.
The news of his death has saddened the entire film industry. Bharathiraja was known for changing the way stories were told in Tamil cinema. His films focused on village life, human emotions, and realistic characters, making him one of the most influential directors in Indian cinema.
During the last few years, Bharathiraja faced several health issues. He was admitted to the hospital in late 2025 because of respiratory complications and received treatment again earlier this year. Although he recovered and returned home, his health continued to remain fragile.
Bharathiraja's film career spanned several decades and produced many memorable classics. Some of his most popular films include 16 Vayathinile, Kizhakke Pogum Rail, Sigappu Rojakkal, Alaigal Oivathillai, Mudhal Mariyathai and Kizhakku Cheemayile. These films earned critical acclaim and remain favorites among movie lovers even today.
Over the years, he worked with legendary actors such as Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, and Sivaji Ganesan. His unique storytelling style inspired generations of filmmakers and helped shape modern Tamil cinema.
Soon after the news of his passing became public, many actors, directors, and fans paid tribute to him on social media. Actress and politician Khushbu Sundar shared an emotional message, remembering him as a filmmaker whose work became a benchmark for cinema and film education.
Apart from directing, Bharathiraja also built a successful acting career. He appeared in several notable films including Aayutha Ezhuthu, Pandianadu, Eeswaran, Thiruchitrambalam, and Maharaja. His performances introduced him to younger audiences and earned widespread appreciation.
His final directorial project was a segment in the anthology Modern Love Chennai released in 2023. His last on-screen appearance came in Thudarum.
The past year was personally difficult for Bharathiraja as he lost his son, actor Manoj Bharathiraja, in 2025. He is survived by his wife Chandraleela and daughter Janani.
