A Chennai court has issued a notice to actor Dulquer Salmaan and the makers of Kaantha, asking them to respond to a petition seeking a ban on the film. The petition was filed by Thiagarajan, grandson of legendary Tamil actor and singer M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar. He alleged that Kaantha is based on the late superstar’s life without the family’s consent.
According to Thiagarajan, the film misrepresents Bhagavathar by depicting him as an immoral man who suffered in poverty during his final years.
He argued that these portrayals are false and damage the legacy of a highly respected artist who, in reality, lived with dignity and prosperity until his death.
The court took note of the complaint and directed Dulquer Salmaan and the producers to submit their official responses by November 18. The controversy has sparked wide discussion in the Tamil film industry, as Kaantha is one of Dulquer’s most anticipated projects.
Fans and historians of Tamil cinema are closely following the case, given Bhagavathar’s historical significance as one of India’s earliest and most celebrated film icons. The outcome of the legal proceedings is expected to determine whether the film will face restrictions or continue with its release plans.
