Hollywood has the reputation of reducing some of the biggest blockbusters at the global box office and they are back on the job with Dune 3 that’s slated for release on December 18 this year.
The excitement around Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three has reached fever pitch, with IMAX 70mm opening weekend tickets selling out within minutes of going on sale, months ahead of the film’s December 18, 2026 theatrical release.
Warner Bros. made the 7 p.m. screenings available for the December 17 to 20 opening weekend, but only at 19 select locations across North America and London, with each venue offering just one showing per day in the premium format. The limited availability meant tickets vanished almost instantly.
The sellout frenzy quickly went onto eBay, where scalpers began listing tickets at jaw-dropping prices. One seller listed a single Dune: Part Three IMAX 70mm ticket at a Cinemark Dallas location for $999, and the listing showed it had already been sold.
Other listings ranged from $100 to over $2,100 for a single seat, with one pair of tickets in Indiana listed for around $1,000. What this means is that a single ticket for this film has already been sold for ₹90,000 and a few tickets are even being sold for ₹2,00,000.
The situation has sparked widespread frustration among fans on social media, with many pointing out that the global shortage of true IMAX 70mm theaters, just 19 locations for the first wave of tickets in the entire US and UK, is the root of the problem.
Fans called for IMAX to urgently expand its network of 70mm screens worldwide.
Director Villeneuve, who shot most of the film on 70mm film, described the format as the most immersive way to experience his work.
