A film meant to stir action and adrenaline is now stirring outrage instead. Jaat, featuring Sunny Deol and directed by Gopichand Malineni and produced by Mythri Movie Maker, has landed in hot waters. What was expected to be a high-octane action entertainer backed by Mythri Movie Makers and People Media Factory is now facing strong backlash online — and the heat is coming from Tamil Nadu.
The controversy centers around the film’s depiction of a fictional militant group called the Jaffna Tiger Force (JTF). Social media users allege that the portrayal closely mirrors the LTTE, the real-life Tamil separatist group that fought in Sri Lanka. They claim the film wrongfully labels the LTTE as terrorists and disrespects the sacrifice of Tamil fighters by painting them as villains. The hashtag #BoycottJaatMovie is trending, with netizens accusing the makers of twisting history.
Some protestors have gone as far as warning director Gopichand Malineni not to enter Tamil Nadu, expressing deep hurt over what they perceive as cultural insensitivity. They’ve pointed out that the LTTE’s origins date back to 1972 under the leadership of Prabhakaran, formed in response to years of alleged oppression faced by Tamils in Sri Lanka. For many, the group represents a painful but proud chapter of Tamil resistance — not a plot device for a villain.
Instead of building anticipation, Jaat now finds itself trying to calm a storm. Whether the filmmakers address these concerns or not, the spotlight has firmly shifted from the screen to the controversy — and Tamil Nadu isn’t staying silent.
