Stars take massive upfront remuneration, while producers take all the risk. That’s how film industries function, mostly the Telugu and Tamil industries. But now, the Tamil industry aka Kollywood, is slowly shifting towards a revenue-sharing model, where actors earn based on the film’s performance instead of locking huge paycheques in advance. This is not just a financial adjustment, but actually the much-needed course-correction for the industry. Here’s how things are getting shaped up now.

Over time, OTT payout resulted in aggressive spending and star remunerations shot up to a point where, in some cases, nearly 70% of a film’s budget went to the hero. The result? Less urgency, fewer films, and producers stuck with mounting pressure. And that resulted in poor performance at theatres, while OTT revenue helps recover the total investment, and heroes are always safe. But the new model being introduced in Kollywood changes the equation completely.

If earnings depend on success, stars can’t afford to stay away for two years between films. They will deliver movies consistently. That’s exactly how legends like Chiranjeevi, NT Rama Rao and Akkineni Nageswara Rao built their authority earlier, by working continuously and staying visible. That consistency didn’t just benefit them; it kept theatres alive and engaged moviegoers throughout the year. Today, that cycle is broken, with even top stars struggling to deliver one film in 2–3 years. Now that Kollywood is trying to bring back that change, it looks like they are heading for a bigger restructuring.

The bigger question now is whether Tollywood will adopt this shift or not. Because right now, the imbalance is evident at the Telugu box office, with single-theatres shutting down, and some theatres demanding share in revenue. More than that sharing model, producers should first bring revenue-sharing model with heroes and star directors. If implemented right, that will change the industry forever, pressing a structural reset button.
