Like a sudden thunderclap in the middle of a festival night, Kotha Lokah Chapter 1 has shaken Kerala’s cinema halls. Released during Onam, the film didn’t just entertain, it rewrote the mood at the box office. Crowds walked in with curiosity and walked out with excitement, spreading the word that something different had arrived. The story of a female superhero on the big screen felt fresh, and that freshness turned into fire at the ticket counters.
Directed by Dominic Arun and produced by Dulquer Salmaan’s Wayfarer Films, the movie introduced Kalyani Priyadarshan as Chandra, India’s first female superhero. The idea itself was bold, but the execution pulled it off with mythological touches, slick visuals, and scale rarely seen in Malayalam cinema. Within the first three days, the movie collected Rs. 42 crores, an early sign that it was not here for a short run. Families, youngsters, and festival audiences all found something to enjoy.
What surprised everyone was how Kotha Lokah stood tall even with Mohanlal’s Hrudayapurvam in theaters. Few expected it to compete at this level, but by its 18th day, the movie grossed Rs. 83.19 crores in Kerala alone. That made it the second-highest-grossing film in the state, only behind Empuraan. In terms of share, it earned Rs. 37 crores, showing clearly that the audience’s response was more than hype, it was real support at the ticket window.
With an investment of Rs. 30 crores already recovered, the film moved quickly into profit. But beyond the numbers, Kotha Loka has opened a door for the future. It proved that Malayalam cinema can create its own superhero universe without copying anyone. It showed that risk, if taken with conviction, can turn into history. And now, the success of Kotha Loka Chapter 1 stands as proof that new stories can not only survive but also overtake giants at the Kerala box office.
