Actor Samantha Ruth Prabhu recently shared her thoughts about women and their journey in the film industry. She spoke at an event for Hollywood Reporter’s Women in Industry and expressed her hopes for a better future where women are treated equally and fairly.
Samantha spoke openly about the struggles women face in their careers. She said that women often adjust a lot in their personal and professional lives. They change their plans, opinions, and even dreams to make others comfortable. She explained that many women do this so naturally that they don’t even realize they are sacrificing something important.
She also pointed out an interesting fact. According to her, women say sorry much more often than men, even in similar situations. This shows how women are conditioned to be more apologetic and less confident in some cases.
Samantha said, "We adjust our schedules, our opinions, our ambitions so everyone around us is comfortable. And we do it so cheerfully and willingly that we don't even register it as a sacrifice. Did you know women apologise nearly ten times more than men in the same situation? Imagine. Ten times more."
She encouraged women to stop doing this and start valuing themselves more. She said that women deserve to take up space and should not feel guilty about their success. She added, "Stop. I'm saying this with utmost humility and because I care. Stop. Because you deserve to take up the space you have earned. Credit is not a bad word. Ambition is not a character flaw. And taking a compliment with a simple thank you is not arrogance. It's just the truth."
Samantha also shared her dreams for the future of women in cinema. She said she hopes there will be a time when stories led by women are not treated as something different or risky. Instead, they should simply be called stories, just like any other film.
She said, "I dream of the day when we stop calling stories female-led as though that is a category, a risk, worse, an apology... and we just call them stories."
She also wants female characters to be shown in a more real and natural way. According to her, women on screen should be strong, complex, and independent, just like women in real life. They should not only exist as someone’s partner or as a reason for a hero’s success.
Samantha further said, "I dream of the day when the women on screen are as contradictory and complicated and human as the women watching them. Not just someone's wife. Or the reason the hero finds his courage. Just themselves. Fully."
She also spoke about equality behind the scenes. She hopes that one day, a woman negotiating her contract will not become big news. It should be normal and expected.
She added, "I dream of the day when a woman negotiating her contract is the most boring headline of the week."
Finally, she spoke about safety in the film industry. She believes that safety should not be discussed only once in a while, but should become a basic rule followed by everyone.
On the work front, Samantha is busy with her upcoming films like Maa Inti Bangaram and Rakt Brahmand: The Bloody Kingdom.
